Little Island, the $260 million park on the Hudson River that opened in 2021, was imagined as a haven for innovation in the performing arts. But the park’s cultural offerings — mostly sporadic, one-off works — have so far fallen short of those ambitions. Now Barry Diller, the billionaire media mogul who paid for the park, is setting out to deliver on the original vision, financing a robust, four-month annual performing arts festival on Little Island, the park announced on Monday. The festival, one of the most ambitious artistic undertakings in New York City in recent years, will promote new work in music, dance, theater and opera. “I want people to enjoy the originality and adventure of Little Island,” Diller said.

Review: Twyla Tharp From Three Sides Now

Twyla Tharp takes making dances very seriously but, at 82, she appears to be having some fun with it — and even poking fun at herself, lightly, in the process. That boisterous ballet closes a program that shows three sides of Tharp, beginning with the punchy “Ocean’s Motion” (1975) and continuing with “Brel,” an introspective new solo for the American Ballet Theater principal Herman Cornejo. (The New York City Ballet principal Daniel Ulbricht performs it on alternate nights.) While “The Ballet Master” concerns itself with the choreographer’s inner world, “Brel” zooms in on the dancer’s. Before any contemporary self-reflection, though, Tharp takes us back to where she’s been.

Google launched several new tools for retailers using generative artificial intelligence to improve online shopping experiences and other retail operations, its cloud business announced in a release Thursday. Google Cloud's offerings are the latest example of generative AI's growing influence in the retail industry. Google's newly unveiled AI products additionally include tools for enhancing retailers' customer service systems and expediting their product cataloging processes. Beyond online shopping, brick-and-mortar stores are also getting new AI capabilities through Google Distributed Cloud Edge, an existing hardware and software product. The announcement of Google Cloud's latest AI tools comes just days before the start of the National Retail Federation's annual convention in New York City.

“Roy’s Joys,” set to recordings by Roy Eldridge, is abundant with layers of vernacular dance, ballet and modern — everything to grow a company of dancers, and grow they did under Battle. That mix of new and the unexpected old was also important in the bigger picture of dance — “Roy’s Joys” (1997) was granted a second, much-needed life at Ailey. Alvin Ailey studied with Martha Graham; Taylor was in her company. I’ll never forget the invigorating sight of Ailey dancers performing Taylor’s “Arden Court,” a bold, crisp example of showing them, as he said, in new ways. But Battle branched out, and as he dusted off the Ailey company, he led it into the 21st century with a public persona that was as fresh as his artistic agenda.

Copeland spoke with The Associated Press about her new focus, fighting for more inclusive emojis, and staying in shape. She wants to push the boundaries and it didn’t matter what question I asked her, she was going to push me (laughs) in every way. That to me is like the grand scheme theme is that art saves lives, and dance and ballet can be inclusive. AP: Why did you start a petition to create new emojis related to dance that are more inclusive? All of these things that I think are such an incredible evolution of where I’ve come from as an artist and as a Black artist.

A scientist who studies the airborne transmission of diseases, a master hula dancer and cultural preservationist, and the sitting U.S. poet laureate were among the 20 new recipients of the prestigious fellowships from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, known as “genius grants,” announced on Wednesday. MacArthur fellows receive a grant of $800,000 over five years to spend however they want. Fellows are nominated and endorsed by their peers and communities through an often yearslong process that the foundation oversees. Many past fellows like Octavia Butler, Paul Farmer and Twyla Tharp are luminaries in their fields and Marlies Carruth, who directs the MacArthur Fellows program, emphasized that they hope fellows will support and inspire each other. "To think that I’ve actually been selected as one is really mind-blowing,” she said, of the MacArthur fellows.

Back then, no one knew what the ocean floor looked like — until one woman used her many talents to find out. When she reflected on her life, geologist Marie Tharp recollected being able to fill in the blanks of the ocean floor, which she saw as a fascinating jigsaw puzzle. SEOUL, July 21 (Reuters) - When U.S. soldier Travis King sprinted across the border into North Korea from the South this week, he disappeared into a North Korea where lingering COVID-19 concerns and restrictions have made the already secretive country more isolated than ever. Officials in Washington said North Korea had yet to give any response through a number of channels, including at the United Nations. North Korean border guards fatally shot and burned the body of a South Korean fisheries official near their disputed maritime border in 2020. North Korean guards at the site still shelter inside buildings, apparently to avoid the risk of catching COVID. But North Korea often seeks meetings with high-level American officials before any releases, and that could be complicated by their worries over COVID, he added.

Booking , Expedia and Airbnb are among travel companies looking for ways to ease the booking process and help consumers more swiftly make plans. This tool will help you narrow that down pretty quickly," Priceline CEO Brett Keller told CNBC. The generative AI tools from Google will allow prospective travelers to communicate with a chatbot in a conversational way when making plans and receive personalized hotel bookings. Google Cloud is providing the tools and capabilities to help Priceline collect and scrub data that can then be used to help customers. Earlier this year, Expedia was among the first players to signal its investment in generative AI.

The archive shows at least three different Trump campaign fundraising ads that leverage the indictment. The Facebook ads, run through Trump's page, say they were paid for by the Trump Save America Joint Fundraising Committee. The political action committee raises money for the Trump campaign and Save America, the former president's leadership PAC. The Facebook ad archive shows a majority of those who have seen that Friday fundraising ad alone are men and women over the age of 65. A Trump campaign spokesman did not respond to a request for comment when asked how much the former president's campaign has raised since the indictment.
Google Cloud said it has developed a new artificial intelligence tool designed to help big-box retailers better track the inventory on their shelves, aiming to improve a technology that has struggled to work well in the past. Google Cloud said Friday its algorithm can recognize and analyze the availability of consumer packaged goods products on shelves from videos and images provided by the retailer’s own ceiling-mounted cameras, camera-equipped self-driving robots or store associates. Google Cloud said its product is trained on a database of over a billion products, including images that are publicly available, licensed and provided directly by manufacturers. He said the Google Cloud product has shown above 90% accuracy during early tests in a Giant Eagle innovation lab, which is designed to replicate store conditions. For now Giant Eagle provides continuous feedback to Google Cloud about where the tool isn’t working so that it can fine-tune, he said.
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. The home where neighbors raised the alarm in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Johnson and another neighbor said the woman told them both about friends who did not survive. Excelsior Springs, a city of about 10,500 people, is about 30 miles northeast of Kansas City, Mo. Minyvonne Burke reported from Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and Daniella Silva reported from New York.
The woman reported the allegations to authorities at 7:47 a.m. Friday, the sheriff’s office said. Minutes before, Johnson saw the woman hunched over and appearing to crawl up her front steps, asking for help, the station reported. The woman told the grandmother that she'd been held in the basement since last month and that she escaped after her captor left the house Friday morning, KSHB reported. The sheriff's office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Haslett was taken into custody after authorities searched his home and the Kansas City police crime scene investigators processed the scene, the sheriff's office said.
